Fixtures for 2021

With lockdown measures easing, the committee and grounds are racing to finalise dates for the county championships. With the reduced amount of time, some clashes are probably inevitable, but everyone is doing their best to minimise this. The fixtures so far are shown here – please keep checking back for updates.

In Memoriam – Rod Gifford

Rod had always been around the county scene since the early 80’s, excelling in ESK and DTL.

He was so proud to qualify in 1989 to shoot for England and represent his country. In those days, we had some of the best shooters in the country in our teams and some very stiff competition.

Rod also competed in all disciplines {15} to an extremely high standard. It was when he became a veteran, his medal tally really took off, winning our Supreme Championship 6 times from 2000 to 2007.

Winning consecutively 4 years in a row was a huge accomplishment given the high all-round standards of the day.

Rod served on the Cambridgeshire CPSA committee for a number of years, with his best friend and wife Lesley at his side who also played a major role in generating funds by running the raffles.

Over the last few years, although his health restricted the amount he could do, Rod always made an effort to help out and as a county shooter we have lost a great supporter to our sport.

But to his family the loss is so much greater.

Rod will be remembered by so many as a friend, a man who gave so much help, encouragement, a top shot, and a true gentleman. Our sincere condolences to his family

2020 Supreme Champion Result

With the last championship of the year having been shot just before lockdown kicks in, we now have the results of the Cambridgeshire Supreme Championship. This competition takes shooters’ best 6 scores from the 9 domestic discplines to determine the winner.

Phil Barnard, Supreme Champion 2020
Phil Barnard, Supreme Champion

Phil Barnard has once again won the overall title scoring 540 points, 26 points clear of the Veteran champion Gary Thatcher. The Barnard haul of titles continued with Corbie Barnard taking the Senior title. Ethan Lord took the Colt title. Sadly no ladies or juniors shot a qualifying 6 competitions.

The Veterans competition was particularly close, being determined in the final, all-round, competition. Gary Thatcher’s 514 was closely followed by Richard Croft on 513 and Tim Jones on 512.

The full results table can be seen here.

Cambs All Round Championship 2020

Well that’s the last of the Cambridgeshire county shoots done for this year. We had a reasonable turn out even after the new lockdown rules that were just announced, and we were lucky to get all the shoots done this year. Thanks to Eriswell Lodge for putting this on for us. The day was a bit overcast and the wind played its part in the scores, and we even had a small amount of rain too.

Congratulations to Henry Sperring; still a Junior and overall Champion, as well as being on the Team GB Talent Pathway. Well shot, great to watch you shoot it. Thanks to the Priory for another great shoot.

Cambridgeshire 2020 Double Rise

At Priory Shooting Ground on Sunday 18th October for the Double Rise there was a little light wind and the light was a bit dull but the rain stayed away but it still made the clays tricky to see. Great targets overall, but the weather conditions made it hard for most people. Thanks go to Priory again for a well run competition.

Update

A flurry of emails from the committee has allowed us to update a variety of the Championship reports on the website.  Some have write-ups added, some have new photos.

We hope you have liked the 2017 redesign of the website – we’ve been getting over 500 visits a week on average, so you’re obviously liking something!

Merry Xmas & Happy New Year

Cambridgeshire ZZ Championship 2017

Report from Tim Jones:

Well that’s all the Cambs shoots done for another year and the time seems to have gone so quickly we have had lots of good shooting from all the people who have been involved in the counties shoots. The last one as always was the ZZ Helice, held at Rugby Sun 26th November.  A cold day with a light breeze from the rear which just could make a difference to the targets if you left them a bit late.  But a strong turnout from Cambs, taking the first 3 placings.  Sat at the top for the day was K Flitton taking top spot again by one target from T Jones to take the vets and M Conway just 2 targets behind and takes the Ladies.  With thanks to John and his team for a good day always a pleasure to go.
