Cambridgeshire Universal Trench Championship 2011

Sunday the 6th March saw the Cambridgeshire faithful travel to Nuthampstead shooting ground  in Hertfordshire. Previously the home of the 8th USAF Bomber Group, the airfield closed in 1954 but there was still a surprising amount of low flying objects on the UT Ranges on Sunday.

 

With an entry of 7 squads we knew it could turn into the longest day. With 16 Cambs shooters including newcomers to the discipline like Jamie Harding who came to try it out, the rest seemed to be from around the country with a large contingent from Rugby GC.

 

The day was very cold and windy - much to be expected for a day at the beginning of March on an airfield in England. The high gun of the day turned out to be Nigal Cave with a 91; a super score from a man who has spent his life shooting the hard trap disciplines.

 

The Cambs shooters started in a mixed way and it looked like James Sole would retain his trophy after starting with a pair of 23s and a 22, but as the day continued James faded to a final round 18, for a total of 86.

 

Peter Waller and Jamie Harding chased James hard, but only managed 85s. Jamie, in hist first ever registered UT, shot two 23s in the last 50, a tantalising one target behind James Sole.

 

So James Sole won the Championship with 86

The Veterans went with a very polished Nick Evans 82

And the Ladies was taken not by the first time by Belinda York with 81.
