Cambridgeshire STR Championship 2017

Cambridgeshire Sportrap 28th/29th October – Cambridge GC

This was tough but fair, the wind made it tough but it was windy for all taking part but, as usual you can’t stop the cream from rising to the top and that it did with two of the country’s top men Mark Bowes and Harry Seal finishing on 87.  Only one person bettered that but he was a Suffolk shooter, Richard Bunning (89).  Vets won by Michael Fryer (79), Juniors Taylor Hedgecock (84) and Ladies Holly Duggan (73), and Colts Kieran Carter (71).  Well shot to you all.

Details of who actually won to follow once provided by the committee!

Cambridgeshire Skeet

Day one of the County Skeet was a hot glorious day. However, there was nothing glorious about the very high winds causing some interesting targets. In spite of their erratic flight Albert Taylor put in an amazing first day score of 98 with Robert Allen and Peter Gaskin hot on his tail with 97’s.

Sunday morning dawned bright and cooler with a brisk wind increasing later into what one shooter said was a ‘mini hurricane’. Some great scores were shot by Peter Cook, Chris Morris, Malcolm Collins and Richard Morris, but nobody managed to pip our Albert’s score.

County Champion Albert Taylor (98) also won the Bev  Waller Trophy.
Senior Men’s: Peter Gaskin (97)
Ladies’ Champion: Janet Maguire (84)
Vets’ : Peter Cook (96)
Colts’ :  A. Bowman(92)
AA Class: R. Allen (97)
A Class: R. Morris (97)
B Class: P. Gaskin (97)
C Class: A. Bowman (92)

28 County Shooters braved the windy conditions so thank you and well done to all.

Our thanks also to Mick & Karen and their staff at Cambridge Gun Club for hosting yet another  of our County Championships.

Cambridgeshire All Round

April 15th & 16th The Cambridgeshire All Round Championship.
This is the second Championship of the year closely following on from the Olympic Skeet but as expected this one was much more popular with the Cambs faithful.
The All Round as per its title consists of some of the most popular CPSA disciplines:
  • Single Barrel, derived from DTL, but only one shot is permitted
  • ABT two shots are allowed but only scored as one point whatever shot hits the target
  • English Skeet; and
  • English Sporting,

and so the total is out of 100.

As we know the cream will always rise to the top, so even on a windy cold weekend, that was what happened with a score of 88: just 12 away can’t be bad. This is what Taylor Hedgecock shot, to become County All Round Champion. There was a chasing pack lead by last year’s Champion Philip Barnard who shot 87, how close is that?

The ladies went to Elizabeth Cook (last year’s Champion) and the Colts to Archie Bowman (again last year’s Champion). The Vets went to Gordon Webster showing his class, and the Juniors also went to Taylor Hedgecock.

Many thanks to Cambridge Gun Club for a very good enjoyable day.

[Thanks to Allan Wright for the report]

Cambridgshire Olympic Skeet Championship

Priory Shooting Ground, 2nd April 2017

This year for the first time it was being held at Priory Shooting Ground at Sutton Bridge in Lincolnshire.

Not a shoot for the faint hearted, it takes a special type of dedication as with most Olympic disciplines. We have just that type of person in Cambridgeshire in Freddy Killander. The proof if you need any, is to look at the averages in “Pull” at the start of the year.
10 Cambridgeshire Shooters had booked in – well 11 if you count me, but I didn’t feel up to it so called off. 21 shooters in total, a very good entry for this shoot. It was also the East Midlands and Notts Championships. The Notts shooters found something else to do on the day and so were a no show.
Some Cambs shooters shot early and had gone by the time I arrived on the ground, but I was in time to watch Freddy in action and that was well worth the journey . He also had 4 other Cambs shooters on his squad including the skeet manager for this year, Don Green, without whom I doubt if we would have had such a good turnout as he worked hard to get them to attend. Don also did what he does best by entertaining the shooters taking part.
As expected Freddy shot very well, not just taking the Cambs Championship, but also the East Midlands – and not for the first time I might add. The next squad out included Philip Smith who took the County Vets title, as he did last year. Most of our shooters enjoyed the shoot, the ground was well run and is well worth a visit. Thanks to all at the Priory.
